The technical term for this is a prophylaxis. The definition being to remove stain, tarter, calculas, and plaque on teeth above the gum line by polishing with a special instrument. At this visit we will most likely take x-rays, offer a fluoride treatment, oral cancer screening, and obtain periodontal charting (by measuring the gum pocket surrounding each tooth). Using all of the data we gather, Dr. Cook will perform an examination to diagnose any problems and make recommendations. We are always happy to offer tools to help with homecare. Digital X-Rays Digital X-Rays are taken using a sensor instead of traditional film. This reduces your appointment time by about 20 minutes by eliminating the need to develop the film. Images are immediately transferred to the computer offering a much higher resolution than film. The patient receives 80% less radiation w/ digital x-rays. Fluoride Treatment Fluoride is a substance used to help with hypersensitivity and the prevention of tooth decay. The benefits of fluoride are evident in both adults and children. It is especially good for areas where the gums have recessed revealing the more vulnerable layer of dentin or root surface. Fluoride works by permeating the tooth structure and remineralizing areas that have been weakened by decay causing bacteria. There are many ways to apply fluoride. We prefer a varnish that is delivered topically by a brush and sets in less than 60 seconds. The results can last up to 6 months. Protective Sealants A sealant is usually recommended for children. It is a tooth colored plastic material that is placed in the grooves or pits on the chewing surface of molars. Its primary function is to prevent bacteria access to the enamel in turn preventing a cavity from forming. Oral Cancer Screening During the dentist's exam, he will check for signs that may indicate oral cancer. Oral cancer generally presents as an unusual lesion or lump or a discolored area. If anything of concern is discovered, he may refer the patient to an oral surgeon for a biopsy or a second opinion. Did you know that oral cancer kills more people nationwide than cervical or skin cancer? Night Guard/ Sports Guard A night guard may be recommended for someone who shows signs of severe bruxism (grinding or clenching teeth) especially at night. This is a clear plastic custom-made guard worn to protect teeth while sleeping. We can also make guards to be worn for protection during sports. They can even be designed in your school's colors. ______________________ ______________________ Monday - Thursday 8:00 am- 5:00 pm Lunch 12:00 - 1:00 ![]() |
